Editing a picture

I'm not sure if this is the right group - here goes.

I have a picture - a line diagram, which I downloaded from the web and
pasted into a Word Doc. Now I'd like to do some editing - specifically to
remove several labels which are part of the existing picture, and replace
them with different labels. I know how to add replacement labels using
inserted text boxes. Is there a simple way to remove the old labels - for
example by pasting white space over them? or is this something better done
in another program?

you might try copying and pasting the image to a graphics editor -- the
simplest being MS Paint (a Windows accessory). If you want something a
little stronger -- you might try to download the trial version of
PaintShopPro from jasc.com. It is very reasonably priced if you choose to
purchase it -- but in the short term the trial version should do what you
need it to do.
