EasyCleaner calling home?

I've used EasyCleaner 1.7 final for years to clean my registry in
Windows98 SE. Just the other day I upgraded to Windows XP Pro, and
decided to download and install the latest free version of
EasyCleaner -- version 2.0.6.369 is the one I got. It seems to
work well, but every time I activate it, the main executable file
tries to connect to the Internet. My firewall, ZoneAlarm, stops
it. I've tried turning off "check for updates" and anything else I
could see in the EasyCleaner menu items, but it still tries to
connect.

Is there any way to stop EasyCleaner from trying to call home (or
wherever) when it is run? What's a safe version that works
correctly with Windows XP? I also downloaded something called
RegScrub XP 3.25, but haven't installed it yet. Is it as good as
EasyCleaner?

Have you tried Options/General and deselect "Check for updates
automatically"?

EasyCleaner is one of those program that I 'watch'. I don't (won't) use
it so I cannot comment on your 'dial home' problem. BUT .... IMHO,
EasyCleaner is a program that tries to do too much ..... a bit of a
'jack-of-all-trades'. There are programs that do each task a LOT better
than EasyCleaner, but I have yet too find one that combines so many
'tasks' into one application, albeit performed in a mediocre way.

Just my opinion.

I hear you.

Have you tried HDCleaner?

It has a zillion features, and like you, I shy away from programs that try
to do too many things. However, the features I have tried in HDCleaner so
far have worked pretty well.

I did turn off "Check for updates" but it makes no difference.
Since writing the post above, I installed RegScrub XP and it seems
to work well. It's a very simple program, just a reg cleaner, but
that's all I ever used EasyCleaner for anyway. I am planning on
uninstalling EasyCleaner.

Well, Win 3.1 has no registry, so registry cleaners aren't needed. Other
features might work, but I wouldn't put money on it.
