E-mails delete automatically when closed

How do I stop received e-mails from deleting automatically when closed? As
soon as the e-mails are opened and read, I'll close them. Before they would
stay as an opened message in my in-box. Now they simply disappear, not even
stopping in my deleted folder.

You probably have your view set to "Unread messages." Check View | Current
View or View | Arrange By | Current View.
