E-Mail Server not recognizing proper version of I.E.

I have windows 98 and have updated my browser to the
latest version of I.E.6.0. When I try to log on to my
company E-mail it responds that I do not have the latest
version of I.E. and won't load my e-mails. When I go to
my system info it states that my version is 5 6.xxx. For
some reason it is not listing the proper version of I.E.
even though I have it running on my computer. How can I
get this problem corrected. I would appreciate help as
this is a very frustrating problem.
