e-mail alert when not working online?

I would like windows mail (vista) to let me know when I have mail when not
working on-line. My hot mail lets me know but not mircosoft e-mail. I have
it turned on in the tools and only when I go to my e-mail will it let e-mail
in.

Windows Mail has no way to find out if you have mail without going online.
Even Hotmail can't do that unless you have Internet Explorer open and
are connected to the Internet.

I have dsl and I am always connected to the internet, but if I am working
online the e-mail alert will not come and hotmail ones does come on.

Hotmail's webmail uses HTTP protocol while Windows Mail uses POP
protocol. Both need a connection to the Internet, but Hotmail's connection
is less noticeable, especially if you have an 'always on' Internet connection.

The bottom line is that POP mail accounts cannot be polled for
messages unless you are online.
