Dynamic web template updating

Guest

When I update my dynamic web template, the only way for it to carry into all my other pages that have that dynamic template is to open each one individually and 'Update Selected Page'. With all the pages that I have it would be much to time consuming to update each one individually. I noticed there are 'Update all pages' and 'Update attached pages' options available under the ‘Dynamic Web Template’ under ‘Format’...I think being able to click on one of these would do the trick, but they're always grayed out and inaccessible. Does anyone know the trick to being able to utilize those 2 update options? Will this update the dynamic template in all the pages that reference it? If it won't any suggestions (other then frames!) for having a consistent 'edging' that each page only differentiates in body content, and if you update the 'edging' on one central location all pages will be updated to reflect the changes? Thanks!!!
(I'm using FrontPage 2003)

The FP2003 DWT "Update All Pages" function works against disk-based sites,
and sites on servers running SharePoint Team Services or Windows SharePoint
Services. It does not work on sites running the FP 2002 server extensions.

Hi Jessica,

When you make changes to your DWT in FrontPage 2003, you should be prompted
when you click "Save" to update all attached pages.

If you are not seeing this prompt, it sounds like you are not opening your
web site, but rather just the DWT itself. Try opening the entire web site
and then make your change.

Oh, Kathleen, thanks! I forgot about that as well.

If you are working against FP 2000 or 2002 server extensions it will also be
grayed out. You should select a group of pages from the Folder list and use
the Update Selected Pages command, I believe.

I have tried this as I'm having the same problem and it doesn't seem to
work. It looks like all the pages have to be open to update from a dwt. If
otherwise, can someone reply please.

Dennis, you must be working against a disk-based web for all pages to be
updated automatically. If server based with FP2000/2002 extensions, then you
must open the pages and use the menu to update them.

Like Jessica I'm having problems with the updating of pages with DWT's
attached.

When saving an amendment to a DWT I'm prompted if I wish to update
pages the DWT is attached, answer yes and it shows log indicating the
pages updated. If you have a normal page open with a DWT attached
whilst updating the page then gets a * asterics next to the page name
indicating an alteration needs saving on the page, but the amendment
to the attached DWT is not visible.

It appears Frontpage knows there is an alteration to the DWT attached,
but is not visibly showing the alteration across to the relevant
pages.

The beauty of shared borders was any alteration was made universally
across the site, if DWT alterations have to be made manually to each
page it will be a nightmare on a large site.

Anybody got any suggestions.

Hi Richard,

As Thomas noted, you need to open all pages to see the change when authoring
against older server extensions, but it sounds like your issue is different.
It sounds like you have the page open and make a change to the DWT but that
change does not show up on the page you attached to. As you note, this
defeats the purpose of using DWTs, and is not the way it is supposed to
work.

The amendment should absolutely be visible on your page that shows the *. I
can't repro a case where that change does not show up, as it is the change
itself that makes the page dirty.

You don't get the prompt if it's a server based web/site under the FP SE (2002 for sure)
- works fine on DWT attached pages in Disc Based Webs/Sites (and TBMK WSS webs/sites)

Even running the DTW Update from VBA in the FP SE server based web/site fails to update pages and can lock up FP)
- appears the FP SE do not recognize presence of the new objTemplate for DWT DynamicTemplateState

Thanks, I'll do that instead.
