Dye Sublimation Printer

Does anyone have experience with a dye sublimation printer that prints
approximately 8½" by 11." I have a Cannon dye sublimation printer that
prints postcard size, but would sometimes like to print larger photos with a
dye sublimation printer.

It has been a while with no responses and I do not know of an A size dye
sub printer but I am wondering - what makes the dye sub printer better
for you than (for example) an inkjet photo printer?

The url listed above has some very old information - the inkjet printer
they compare is the Epson 800, which was introduced in March of 1993
(http://www.epson.com.sg/aboutus/hallmark_products.shtml). Inkjet
technology has improved enormously in the last decade and the image
quality advantage dye sub once had no longer exists.

If you would like to email me a photo and your address I will print
samples on a Photosmart 2610 and Photosmart 8750 printer and mail them
back to you and you can compare for yourself. mailto:[email protected]

Thanks for the offer Bob,

Several stores in the area have printers on sale and are more than willing
to make demo prints. At the present I have 4 printers, and do not have to
rush into buying another one.

Yes, the newer printers certainly have improved, and I'll probably not buy
another dye sub.

Nice pictures, I especially like the waterfall.

Kodak make some - relatively inexpensive 1400 model seems quite popular:
http://www.steves-digicams.com/2005_reviews/kodak1400.html

I don't have one, but it's claimed that the output quality is pretty
good. I have read reports about problems with dust/streaking - ideally
requiring to operate them in as clean an environment as possible.

They are supposed to be ideal for "event" printing where clients are
given the prints immediately. Inkjet printers have problems for this -
as pigment inks on photo papers are quite easily scratched until the ink
dries - which can take many hours, and dye inks either lack water
resistance or print display longevity. With event printing, even if the
client is told to take care until the print dries, they are also keen to
show the print to friends and hand it around immediately. AFAIK,
expected print display life with the 1400 is okay - on a par with
average colour wet-process prints, but not as good as pigment inkjets.
Also, you are limited to glossy or matte (really satin) papers.

If you post questions about this printer on DPreview printers forums, a
recently retired employee of Kodak (Bob Collette) may be able to answer
any questions that you have.
