Dx Shaders are more trouble than theyre worth

Something Ive noticed in a few games (Halo, Knights of the Old Republic and
Deus Ex : Invisible War) is that heavy use of shaders really cripples
perfomance and for my money doesnt look anything special.
Chucking my old GeForce2 back in for Halo and KotoR
gave better performance without a few of the bells and whistles but so what
! - it doesnt change the gameplay one jot.
I know all you 9500-9800 kiddies will say upgrade your card (Ive got a 8500)
but the vast majority of PC users cant afford that kind of kit and dont want
to spend £120+ on a graphics card. Besides even ppl with high-end PCs bitch
about poor performance in those games.
I just finished playing Deus Ex:IW and all the time I kept thinking if only
they'd revamped the original UT engine with OpenGL renderer. With higher
ploycount models and hi-res compressed textures they could have made a
beautiful game than everyone could have enjoyed.
What do you guys think ?
Are there other games using shaders that perform poorly ? ( I read a lot
about NFSU - does that use shaders?)

No we'll say why not just turn pixel shaders off? I know you
can do it with Halo.
