DVD writer fails

Having DVD writer HL-DT-STDVDRRW GWA-4166B in a HP Ixtreme 7036 pc when
burning a DVD with video (VOB, IFO) the burned video always fails in the
beginning of the medium as the played video always fails within the 5 first
minutes.

I tried different brands of writetable DVD's (DVD+R) but the problem keeps
coming. Reading a DVD not burned op my pc, there's no problem.

Can I get some help ?

Thanks!

What DVD writing software are you using? XP native tools only can do
CDs.

How old is the drive? This is probably not the answer you want to hear but
these devices do have "best before dates". I seem to have to replace my
burner once every two years.

Try playing a DVD burned on your PC on another player and/or on some other
machine. If it won't play there either, you can be pretty sure that your
burner has gone belly-up.

It sounds as though the laser has deteriorated to the point where it will no
longer burn reliable images. This is a common failure mode as the laser is
a limited life item (in my opinion: with far too short a life). 2 years
would seem to be the average life of a DVD writer with some as short as 6
months.
