DVD-RW drive wont work

We have a sony vaio PCV-RS410 that is only 9 months old. Aside from our
numerous other problem our dvd drive now won't work. We have taken it in a
few times and they say nothing is wrong, but it doesn't recognize dvd's and
won't write. Usually the response is no disc. Everything worked great, and
then we tried to copy some files to disc and now nothing works. Anyone have
any suggestions.

I have read that we can uninstall our dvd driver, but we are not sure how to
reinstall.

Please also see my new posting tonight regarding a Sony
Vaio. I believe it may be an incompatibility issue with
SP2. Soemone may post some ideas. PS: I have tried the
suggestions your correspondents have made - no joy!

I tried to edit registry but it wouldn't take. This is what Microsof
says, keep in mind you can PAY them for the hotfix but otherwise if yo
want it for free you have to wait until SP3 comes out. What a ripoff!

Here you go:

SYMPTOMS
When you insert a DVD-RW disc into the DVD drive of a Microsoft Window
XP-based computer, Windows XP does not recognize the disc. For example
you do not see any files on the disc.

You may also experience this problem with DVD-RW discs that have bee
formatted as DVD-VR. Some consumer DVD recorders use the DVD-V
format.

CAUSE
This issue occurs because the Universal Disc Format driver, Udfs.sys
tries to read the DVD-RW disc by using a packet length of 32 block
instead of by using a packet length of 16 blocks. CD-RW uses a packe
length of 32 blocks, but DVD-RW uses a packet length of 16 blocks.
