I have gateway 2000 upgraded to windows xp home for many years, added dvd rw
and removed the dvd rom so then i had dvd rw and cd rw that worked fine
untill resently it started to run really slow to access if it would access at
all. i figured it was too many things running and got my progect done. then i
decited that i would replace the cdrw with the dvd rom that i had removed
preveously. well to make a long story short now when i try to acess either
the dvd rw or the dvd rom it locks up and restarts the system. so I double
checked the jumpers retried but same deal. so i took the dvd rom out and put
the cdrw back in checked the jumpers and restarted and nope, same deal. tried
running just the dvd rw same deal as well as just the cdrw. tried creativly
changeing around the pwer plug ins and that did nothing. checked the
bios....nothing. to do a restore and it only went back to a week or so. and
did not help. ANY!!!! help on this would greatly be accepted........thanks!

Drives failing? Try a troubleshooter from the manufacturer.
Are the discs you are using scratched or damaged?
Is there a utility controlling the drive's speed? Nero has such a utility.

I could believe drives were failing if dvd rw wasn't less than six months old
and a perfectly good dvd rom that I had replaced with the dvdrw didn't do the
same thing. I had read that INcd caused a problem similer to this so last
night I took that out but it did not change anything. I really feel this is a
windows xp thing. It seems to have a tendancy to make things disappeir and
reapear. I have had sound go away, printers, scaners you name it. so this
just seems to me somthing very similar.??????
