DVD Regions

J

I bought a new computer a friend told me that I have
to be careful with playing non-Region 1 DVDs (I'm in
the United States). He said that the DVD can be
put into a mode where I won't be able to play Region 1
media.

I found the "DVD Region" under the DVD properties and
it indicates Changes Remaining: 4 and the Current Region
is set to 1.

Is there a way I can force it to Region 1 permanently?
I tried inserting this one DVD but the count doesn't
decrease.

TIA

AFAIK, the DVD region must be manually changed by the user. A DVD from
a different region cannot change the defaulted DVD region automatically.
A DVD from a region other than the one set in the player would not play
or properly decode.

The region will not change from 1 to any other unless the user changes to another
region.
The count of region changes remaining will also remain the same unless the user
changes to another region. Each time the user changes the region the remaining
changes count will drop 1 for each change. When the count gets to 0 (zero) changes
remaining the user will not be able to change the region anymore and the last region
chosen will be the one the user is stuck with.

Unless of course, he decides to flash the drive, a practice that in such
case I think is fully justifiable. The Dangerous Brothers
