DVD-RAM won't burn to dvd or read data stored on dvd

I have a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4167B from LG. Its about 2 years old.
I'm running winXP sp2.

The last time I burned something to DVD using it was a few months
back, and it worked fine.

Now, it won't burn or read data that is on a dvd-r/dvd+r. It can read
and burn cd-r/rw as well as play dvd movies. When I try to copy a dvd
movie, it will copy the dvd files to my computer, but won't recognize
the blank dvd in order to burn.

I formatted my pc just yesterday (due to an unrelated problem), and
the dvd-ram still does not burn or read from dvd-r/+r, so I'm thinking
that its not a windows problem.

I've noticed that others have posted having a similar problem to this,
but what is the solution? Is it time for a new dvd-ram, or can this
one still be saved somehow?

I'd be happy to hear any ideas and suggestions.

Thanks.
Diana

Sounds like a hardware problem to me.

It may just be a dirty laser lens. Try using a cleaning DVD first - they can be
purchased for under $10 and come in handy for all CD and DVD players/drives/burners.
If that doesn't help, a new double-layer DVD burner will cost less than $50 and they
are easy to install - just 4 screws and a couple of cables to move. Just be sure to
match the jumper on the new drive the jumper on the old drive.
