DVD player and external hard disk

My (Philips) dvd player has a USB socket and can play DivX files,
among a few other formats. You can plug in a memory stick or an
external hard disk (provided they are formatted in FAT32). However,
folders and files are not shown in numerical and alphabetical order on
the tv screen, but in the order in which they were made or copied.
Is there a simple way to change this?

What is the model number and "popular name" of the unit ?

I'd want to look for a manual first, in case there is some
goofy multiple key press thing to fix it.

A lot of boxes like that (routers, modems, multimedia boxes)
use embedded processors, and run a small copy of Linux. In
some cases, the manufacturer may offer firmware updates,
to change or improve the performance of the box. So it's worth
visiting the support web site, to see if a firmware update
is available.

Haven't seen it in the manual.

I've found a way to show the files in numerical and alphabetical
order, but it involves using a program which rewrites the FAT table of
the hard disk. That's not my preferred way.

I also use a Philips DVD player with USB input that plays avi files and had
the same problem. I fixed it by running a free software application on the
USB stick after I'd copied the files. It's called DriveSort and it
re-arranges the MFT or whatever on the stick so that the files are then
listed in order when it's read on a non-Windows device. It takes but a few
seconds (it doesn't physically move the files) and afterwards, when you plug
it into your Philips player it will display the files in alpha-numeric
order.

It's fairly intuitive to use, I didn't read a 'readme' or anything, just
installed and hovered over the buttons and checked out the drop-down menus.

Best of luck.

Ahh, didn't read this far.

To the best of my knowledge it's the *only* way short of writing each file
to the USB device individually in the order you want then displayed. The
Philips player will only read the files from the 'drive' in the order in
which they were written. Even with modded firmware this seems to be a
limitation of these devices.

My email in these postings is a fake. (I've been using nospam@needed
since I started posting here, and I should really be using .invalid
on the end.)

I don't generally give out my email address. USENET is a perfectly
fine medium for communications.

If you have a question, post it here, and give everyone a
chance at it :)
