DVD Playback is "JERKY"

Had no problem once apon a time playing DVD's on the Dell Innspiron 6000.
It's got 2 gigs of memory and all the other toys but for some
reason, these days,I'll pop a movie in and it will play like an ols "Godzilla"
movie dubbed over in English...
Everything seems to be
slow by a second or two. What gives?
Could it be something to do with Direct X OR too many things going on in the
system {behind the scenes} and hogging up the needed rescources for windows
media???

Hello

First check to see if your dvd drive settings are in order.

1) Right click on My computer...then select properties

2) select the hardware tab....then click device manager

3) Under ther heading tree call IDE ATA/Atapi controllers double click the
primary ide channel or secondary channel depending what channel you DVD is
on. If your computer only has 1 hard drive and a dvd player it is possible
that your DVD player could be on the primary channel. If thats the case then
the Hard Drive would be the Device 0 and your DVD is Device 1. The other
setup that is possible, if you have just the hard drive on the primary
channel and the dvd is on the secondary channel. Its all depending who
designed and built your computer.

4) Then check under advanced setting tab to see that your DVD settings is
set to DMA if available and not PIO.

5) Also try updating DirectX located here -
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.mspx

6) also clean up your possibly untidy hard drive. first run a check disk to
see if you have bad sectors on drive...start>run>cmd ..this will bring up
your command prompt...then type... chkdsk /f ...it will ask you would you
like to check the disk next time you restart your computer....select
yes...then reboot and sit back and let the chkdsk utility do its thing.

7) Then once your computer is started again... start>all
programs>accessories>system tools> disk cleanup>select folders which have
huge amount of data that is wasting space on your drive. A lot of times
people dont empty their Internet Exporer folder which by deafult is set at
1.05GB to store cached files on your drive. If its set to high and you dont
clean it out then systems can be slowed down from the clutter. Its
recommended to set Ineternet Exprorer cache at 10 MB.

8) Next run disk defragmentation ...start>all programs>accessories>system
tools> disk defragmentation
This will help tidy up your computer...doing a defrag will re-arrange all
data neatly on your drive so your hard drive needle doesnt have to travel all
over the drive to access a program or file. This does improve performance.
Disk Defrags is recommended on a weekly basis.

Let me know how you make out ?

Try turning off Antialiasing & Antistropic located in your video cards
control panels advanced properties.

You can try different video players to see if the problem exists with the
software application. For example... Try Windows Media Player 10 or 11, Nero
Show Time, NvDVD by Nvidia. If one application works then the problem would
be with a configuratoin setting with in the other dvd software program.

Try upgrading the DVD software that came with your DVD player from the
manufacturers web site.
