dvd HP 840b

Paul

I have a HP DVD RW 840b, which I have on a duel boot system XP/Vista.

It worked fine for a while then all of a sudden a couple of weeks ago the
DVD drive disappeared and I cant seem to re install it.
It's there in device manager with an exclamation mark, but Vista can't find
the drivers for it, even when it goes online.

Can anyone help please?

Paul you betcha.

I can't say with 100% certainty but I can give you a high percentage cause
for this acute disappearance of the functionlity of you HP DVD burner. They
make nice DVD writers. I want you to follow the simple steps in this
MSKB--and let us know if this fixes things.

Filter values are introduced that block the working of the DVD software
programs at a number of points--I've seen them keep Nero and Roxio and
others from opening, from closing, and commonly from picking out the file
( for example a Vista ISO to be burned).

CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive appears to be missing after you install
Windows XP or Windows Vista

Go to these registry subkeys and click on them and then look for the upper
or lower filter values (either one) and if you see any of the ones ID'd in
this MSKB then click on them and right click delete them). As long as
you're careful to match what's in the MSKB, this is one of the rare times I
never back up the registry and set a restore point, but if you want to
backup, set a restore point and in the registry:

File>Export>Radio Button on the lower left of dialogue box entire
Registry>and save to a convenient place--desktop or other location of your
choice.

There are other reasons but they are relatively rare:

Other reasons that are very rare are:

Good luck,

Let us know how deleting filter value or values I bet are present works out.
