DVD has great picture but no sound

I have a Compaq Presario. When I tried to play a commercial DVD, I got a good
picture but no sound at all. There is a sound card. When I play the music
that came with Vista, the sound is fine. What do I have to do to hear as well
as see my DVD?

Thank you.

In the sound/volume control, there is a separate control for CD/DVD sound.
Double click the sound/volume icon and move the slider for the CD/DVD up to
a reasonable level.

I'd already tried the little speaker icon in the lower right-hand corner of
the screen and the volume controls within Media Player.

I went to Control Panel-Sound -Playback - Properties - Levels - Internal
Speaker Headphone - CD Audio (DVD not mentioned) I turned the volume at CD to
loudest. Still can't hear anything.

The computer is supposed to play DVDs, so I looked at another tab:
Internal Speaker/Head[hone Properties said -channel, 16 bit, 48000 Hz (DVD
quality) So I guess this means that it does indeed play DVDs.

Is there anyplace else to look for a volume control?

Thank you.

are you getting any sound at all from other applications? Did you try
different dvds? Did you try a different codec?

I have the same problem. Ever since I upgraded my Compaq computer to Windows
Vista, I can no longer hear the sound during DVD playback. I have tried all
the same attempts to fix it, that Elizabeth has tried. I am just about ready
to reinstall the old Windows XP if I can't get this fixed. I can hear all
other sounds. Only the DVD playback sound is does not work. Is this a
driver problem with the DVD player? I checked for the latest drivers for the
DVD, and Vista said I have the latest one. I have tried MANY DVD's and they
all have the same problem.

Is there a volume control within your DVD playing software that can be
adjusted?
I would suspect something incompatible in the DVD decoding software,
assuming the sound works for other applications.

The sound is turned all the way up on the QuickPlay software that came with
the Presario laptop. It is also not muted with the hardware button, or the
software button.

It's weird. You can't turn the sound on in Media Player or Control Panel or
with the icon in the lower right corner. You put the DVD in, and the picture
starts but no sound. What you have to do is click on the Start icon, then All
Programs. You'll see DVD or DVD playing. When you click on that, the sound
works. Strange.

I don't have Quick Play, so I don't know if it'll work for that. Just click
everything on the computer that says DVD and you might get lucky and hit it.

My Presairo has the same problem as well. The HP DVD player sound works fine
byt the picture is choppy. WMP has smooth video but no DVD sound. WMP music
plays fine. Compaq Tech Support had me update the drivers with no success.
Then they told me this is a known issue with Vista Basic. There is no
mention of it on the Windows site. Does anybody have any suggestions?
