DVD & DVD RW ROMs missing!

My DVD & DVD RW ROMs have suddenly disappeared. In device manager they both
have yellow exclamation marks and I see the message:-

"A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver
may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)"

in the General tab. I used the Troubleshooter and uninstalled and
reinstalled both roms - still did not work. I tried to update the drivers
but the current one is the best! Any and all suggestions would be
appreciated.

Hi Jim,

See if the information in this MSKB article, "CD-ROM Access Is Missing and
Messages Cite Error Code 31, Code 32, Code 19, or Code 39 After You Remove
Easy CD Creator in Windows XP" is helpful in resolving the problem (don't
let the reference to Easy CD Creator in the title dissuade you):

Thanks Patti

The article at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=314060 "CD-ROM
Access Is Missing and Messages Cite Error Code 31, Code 32, Code 19, or Code
39 After You Remove Easy CD Creator in Windows XP" worked! I created a
Restore Point before editing my Registry as advised.

In my case I remember changing the driver when burning a DVD in Magix Movie
Edit Pro last weekend this was probably the villain - thank you so very much
for your advice!

Some driver like file (probably associated with CD burning software) has
gone AWOL, leaving a hanging reference in registry. To tidy up, get a
registry patch file, cdgone.reg, from
www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip, extract it, r-click on it and merge
it into the registry

You will then need to reinstall any burning software that you *do* use.

Thanks Alex - I carried out Patti's advice and read "article at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=314060
"CD-ROM Access Is Missing and Messages Cite Error Code 31, Code 32, Code 19,
or Code 39 After You Remove Easy CD Creator in Windows XP" and it worked. I
had no need to reinstall nero as I have burned several CDs and a DVD since.

Thanks for the advice anyway!

Jim

Do a system restore back to when they were working.
Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore
