DVD drive

I have a Pioneer DVD drive which I have installed, when I
run the add new hardware wizard it installs it fine but
then whenever I shut down the computer and reboot it
again the drive has gone.
Please can somebody help me.

You shouldn't have to run any hardware wizard.... the drive should be
automatically detected on startup and XP should install the correct drivers
for it.

As mentioned, you do not need to run the wizard; CD and DVD drives are
automatically recognized by Windows XP. I'd swap cables or disconnect any
other devices on that IDE channel. If you have another machine you can put
the drive into, do that and see if it comes up listed in Explorer. If so,
you may need to reinstall XP. I had a similar problem, and I tried
everything I could. Finally, the reinstall did it. Never did find out why
the bugger wouldn't show up!
