DVD drive

Hi
Wonder if anyone can help please.

I have a 3 yr old HP computer on which the internal dvd /cd writer
is playing up,they are rather slim and it does not look easy to fit
another non HP writer in it's place.

I have two external dvd writers with mains power feed and USB
connection to comp.

Question,if I wish to save something to cd-r or dvd disc's on the HP
dickey one I can right on item to save and choose from the drop down
list send to dvd/cd rewriter drive E,but when the external dvd writers are
connected and switched on they don't appear in the right click drop down
list so I
can use the option *send to so/so drive* to save to.

Is there a way of getting them to be made available in right click drop down
send to list please ??
Many thanks

Barry.
If it ain't broke-don't fix it.

Just what is the writing software being used? If it is just a
proprietary application that came with the HP DVD/CD writer, then
one should not be expecting it to help write to a non-HP device.
OTOH, if the write application is an off-the-shelf Roxio or Nero
product, then all of the possible target devices should be listed.

Hi GHalleck
Many thanks for the reply.
Not to well up on computers afraid, but will try to explain best I can.

HP computer came with CD ROM drive and DVD writer/CD writer.
Already installed was/is a program called Sonic record now, from
what I can see just copies/burns CD's-I never knowingly use it.

From your reply I think you are saying that this is/maybe the reason
that only the HP dvd/cd writer appears in drop down list when I right
click and try to use sendto, this does work but drive is dicky.

I do also have installed Nero premium 7 installed that I purchased and
installed, again rarely use or open.

If I uninstalled Sonic record now -would Nero 7 then become the default
burning software ???and then show my external dvd/cd writers in the drop
down list with the option of saving to external drives.

Is that what you are saying above ?.
Many thanks.

Barry.

Hi barry,

If I'm reading you right, you can just type "sendto" in the run box to
access the sendto folder, where you can then add a shortcut to your USB
drives..
Cheers

Hi Jaymon
Had a look as you suggested, just gave four folders that windows could
not open-all are empty.
Did not see anything that refers to *sendto*
Thanks for help.

Hi Jaymon
Thanks for reply
Those 4 folders should be in the sendto folder itself, just add your
shortcut
for your CD/DVD USB drives.. If you don't know how, ask..?

OK,how do I do the above please?.
That would make 5-6 folders in there, after you add your shortcuts.. I
never
said to try and open the folders in the sendto folder, you'll get a
warning
pop-up window, if you try to open them there..

Correct I did.

Those same 4 shortcuts/folders
you saw should also be in the "send to" drop down menu..

Again you are right, they do appear in drop down list.
Did you type sendto in the run box without ("") quotes..?

Yes.without.

Thanks
Barry.

Hi,

Ok barry,

Can you see your USB optical drives in the My Computer window, what ever
drive letter they may have been assigned, F: G: , etc.. I'll assume you see
them, ok..?
Now, open the sendto folder window like I instructed you to do previously,
open a My Computer window as well, should see 2 open windows now, ok..? Now
with your mouse, left click and hold the mouse button as you drag the USB
CD/DVD icon to the sendto folder window and release or drop it there, may
need to position the windows side by side or overlap them slightly, do the
same for the other USB drive as well, done.. Now check the sendto drop down
menu to see your new additions..
Hope this helps you..
Cheers

Glad I could help, thought I might just chime in and respond to you about
your question posed to GHalleck.. If you uninstall Sonic RN, Nero 7 will
become the default burning app, yes, Nero should like that.. There may
however since both have been installed, removing by way of add remove
programs, the possibility of the Sonic RN leaving drivers in the upper and
lower filters, even after it's removed properly.. This could cause the
optical drives to vanish from the My Computer window,

Hi Jamon
Many thanks for the answer to the post to GHalleck,I have copied/saved your
reply re Sonic and uninstalling//poss problems, while every thing is running
ok
I will leave well alone (see sig).

You sorted my main problem for me re dvd drive, very much appreciated.
Thanks again.

Hi again Jaymon.
Don't know if you are still looking at this thead ?

I posted yesterday after all your help that the external dvd writer
now appears in the right click drop down list, which it does.

I thought that all was ok but had not tried to right click/send /save
to the external drive.F is the letter assigned to external cd/dvd writer.

Tried later in day the and it will not send item to be saved to disc/cd !
when I try keep getting message.

F:\ is not accessible
incorrect funtion

Is there a simple way of getting around this please.

Reassign it a permanent drive letter like Q. Windows gets confused when the
drives up front keep changing letters.
