DVD drive troubl

My _NEC DVD_RW ND-2510A does not recognize a blank dvd- r, it shows it as
full and the icon when in "my computer" shows a cd player after disk is
loaded. The drive will record and recognize cdr or cdrw but not dvdr. Plays
dvd's fine.
Cannot flash with updated firmware because it is not designed for Gateway
product. Tried anyway but it would not locate drive to flash. Drive works
fine with Nero and probably anyting other than "my computer". Must be a
Windows XP thing?

Any Help?

I am not aware that Windows XP supports burning to DVDR/RWs. Looking at
the help system, it talks about CDs exclusively.

As long as the drive burns DVDs in Nero I would suggest that it is
simply not supported by Windows.
