DVD drive quit working

W

Walter R.

Running Win Xp 3.

Installed a new LG DVD recorder a week ago. It worked fine for a week,
reading and recording.

Today it stopped working:

When I insert a disk, in Windows Explorer it shows only the name of the
drive but no disk info. When I use the Nero test program it tells me, no
disk inserted, although I know quite well that a disk is in the drive.

Device Manager shows the device as working properly.

When I insert a disk (CD or DVD) the LED at the drive lights up a few times
and then goes out, leaving the drive dead.

Autorun is set for "Notify me each time", but it does not show up on the
screen

Is this drive defective or can I do anything else to restore it to good
health? Looks like another piece of crap from Korea.

Thank you

Make sure to test it with a number of original CDs/DVDs (not burned ones).
If it does not work, return it to the point of sale for a warranty
replacement.

Had a similar problem, but with an older LG drive--drive recognized, but
no CDs were recognized.

Out of curiosity, I put a CD in the drive, noted its orientation, closed
the door, waited for it to finish 'reading' then opened the door and
the CD orientation was the same. Tried a few more times with different
orientations and it was always the same, indicating the drive was
not spinning. Replaced the drive, all was well.

You might try this test. If you get similar results you might contact LG
for a replacement/refund.
