DVD Drive Not Recognised

I have an IBM laptop and now the DVD drive is not being recognised. I
have looked into Device manager and the DVD drive has disappeared. I
had an earlier message which said that the entry for the DVD drive in
the registry was corrupt. Does anyone know how I can fix this. I would
normally re-install Windows XP, but I cannot access the DVD drive. I
have tried the install new hardware wizard., but it does not pick up
the drive.

I would appreciate any help assistance.
Thanks in advance,

Gordon

Mike, Thanks very much for this.

I have run the script, as the administrator, but it has not worked. The
message that I when I try to add the DVD drive get is:

"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration
information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

Do you have any other advice?

Thanks,

Gordon
