DVD drive freezes during ripping!

I have a Toshiba SD-M1502 DVD-ROM drive that I've been using for
ripping. It has "edited" firmware that unlocks speed and was the best
ripper I've ever seen when I had a Lite-On SOHW-832S DVD R/RW
installed as master on IDE2 with the Toshiba as slave.

But when I replaced the Lite-On with a NEC ND-3520A, the Toshiba
started freezing when I try to rip. There are no other changes.
Connections and settings are exactly the same as with the Lite-On. I
rechecked the cable and made sure all connections are correct and
firmly attached. Jumpers are correct.

The program I use for ripping is SmartRipper. The new NEC will rip
with no problems, but it's not as fast as the Toshiba was when it was
working correctly.

Connections are with a UDMA5 cable, which I'm sure isn't needed since
both drives are set to UDMA2. But it shouldn't hurt.

Any ideas why the Toshiba now stops after it's ripped about 2 to 4% of
a DVD and refuses to continue? It does that with everything including
some DVDs it ripped earlier with no problems.

Thanks for your helpful ideas!

Well the obvious test is - does it do it with the NEC disconnected?
If it doesnt then you have a weird problem.

Thanks for the input. Problem now solved! I exchanged the Toshiba
DVD-ROM with a Lite-On SOHD-167T in my second computer. That paired
the Toshiba up with its original mate. Also, the NEC burner seems to
get along well with the Lite-On DVD-ROM. Both rippers are working
perfectly once more.
