DVD drive does not play anything

My Samsung SD-816B DVD-ROM does not play any kind of DVD or CD. It has been
this way for quite some time now, preventing me from finding an appropriate
restore point or even what might be causing the problem. I have tried:

-Norton Systemworks 2003 to reveal the partition (it was in C:, my DVD drive
is D:) and boot from CD
-clean booting
-uninstalling/reinstalling SP2
-uninstalling/reinstalling the driver
-updating the driver with firmware from the Samsung website
-cleaning

None of these have worked, and I really have no idea how i could fix my
problem. When i click on the drive in My Computer, it says "Please insert a
disk in Drive D:." when there is a DVD already in there. My CD drive works
perfectly and is completely separate from the DVD.

(I am running Windows XP.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated; this is my last resort.

Thanks

What is shown for the drive in Device Manager? Your DVD drive has nothing
to do with System Restore. Check the Samsung website for troubleshooting
information and as a very last resort a new DVD drive will cost about
$35.00.

Device Manager says the device is working properly. I went through the
troubleshooter as well and it didn't solve the problem.
