DVD/CDRom Disappeared

I'll try again.
DVD/CDRom on my Dell 9100 disappeared, it had previously been behaving
erratically
1. The shortcut on the 'desktop' disappeared
2. There is no sign on 'My Computer'
3. It appears in the device manager as 'working properly'
4. It responds to a disc insertion with the small disc next to the mouse
pointer, and the drive 'purrs'
5. Have contacted Dell and the diagnosis confirmed that the drive is ready
and willing but it appears that Xp is not.
6. Have tried 'restore' with no effect
Any clues? Thanks in advance.

If you have two drives on an IDE channel and one goes bad, both may NOT
be seen by Windows.
