dvd/cdrewriter combo drive

what would stop one of these from reading even legit cds but still alow the
reading of homemade dvds? I am anticipating tech support suggesting format
and reinstall so i have already done that but still no joy. This himat CD
wizard thing thats built into xp, could that affect it?

Could be faulty, there two seperate lasers for CDs and DVDs. Sounds like
the CD laser has died. Boot from a WIN98 boot diskette with CDROM support
and see if fault still present.

program cds still run. i was able to boot from the recovery cd. it would
seem only music and any home made cds don't work. I wonder if it could have
been an autoupdated driver or firmware. A fresh install hasn't cured the
problem and copies of windows can't be used to boot from. Most perplexing.
