I have just turned on my laptop only to discover that my 'd' drive has
dissapeared and I can no longer read a cd or play a dvd. The drive spec is:
Matshita DVD-Rom SR-8176.

When I look in device manager I am getting the following message:

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configeration
information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged (code 19).

Can anyone advise how I get it back

My machine is a Packard Bell Easyone Silver 3100 DVD.
O/S XP Prof.

Please try and simplify if the answer is complicated.

Thankyou

Looks complicated but yes it identifies what happened. Yes I did uninstall
Easy CD creator programme few days before the problem occurred.

If I re install it will that put back the drive? Or is that wishful thinking?

Barny this is a common problem in XP - the drives dissapear. It can happen
even without Easy CD install or uninstall. If you follow those directions
carefully and delete the upper and lower filters in the resolution section it
most likely will solve the problem. It's not as hard as it sounds. Here is
another page that shows the same directions but this page also has a little
program you can run that may do it for you:

I know this from first hand experience.

Hi otis dog,

I followed your suggested link. The little fix download did not work so I
followed the instructions instead. I went into Registry Editor and selected
'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM..........' but there were no 'upper or lower
filters' listed in the right hand panel. So have now come to a dead end.

I have no idea what to do now?

Can you help?
