DVD Burning - guidance needed

D

dkb

How could one copy a DVD with more than 7.97 GB content to two DVDs?
Something as one downloads a program to a Floppy and while copying it is
asked to insert another blank floppy.
My problem: A Dual layer single blank DVD (Mitsubishi) costs here
something about 3.23 USD at present while as a ordinary blank DVD
(moserbaer) with around 4.7GB costs 0.52USD, so even if copying of a DVD
takes two such blank DVDs it is still cheaper.
Any guidance on this please?

Some software that comes with DVD burners will allow you to span more that
one DVD. See if yours does. Otherwise do a google search for software that
will span multiple volumes or disks or dvd's.

Thanks for the information. The Nero that is bundled with the recorder
does not have disc span facility.

My Roxio software that came with my drive will span multiple DVD's. It seems
strange that Nero doesn't since they are direct competitors.

I would suggest that you try to use Nero to copy enough files so that it
would require a second DVD and see what the program either tells you before
the copy or wait and see what happens after the first DVD fills up.

With Nero I tried to copy a DVD that was around 8GB. The copying did not
take place because it said that the destination medium is of smaller
size and truly it was of 4.7GB only. I tried to find any mention of
spanning in the help of Nero---I did not find any. I am using Nero
6.6.1.4 Sony edition. What is the version of Roxio you are using please?

Just out of curiosity, does the DVD contain video, or is it a data DVD?

If it's a video, the freeware program DVD Shrink (Google for it) is an
excellent tool for re-encoding video to fit on a single-layer DVD-R.

dkb,

I have Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 Basic DVD Edition. This came with my
Plextor burner. I have not actually burned a multi-disk project, but the
help file says that I can. Also, to read these disks, you need to use Roxio
Retrieve which comes with the package.

I would assume that if you buy the latest version, it will also do this.
Just make sure you can get a refund if it doesn't. You can also look at
Roxio's web-site for info.

Roxio and Nero cannot coexist on the same computer. When I tried to install
Nero, it wanted to remove Roxio, so I cancelled.

Roxio versions 6 and subsequent are certainly capable of spanning DVD disks.
It is surprising that recent versions of Nera aren't as well.

Yes DVD contains video and it is not a data DVD. I have downloaded the
DVD Shrink and shall report to the NG about whether I succeeded or not soon.

You should be aware that most spanning solutions are applicable to
*data* DVDs, not video DVDs. Your DVD player is not likely to
recognize the result.

Whether you get a reply from Roxio or not, see my prior 2 posts. Roxio can
do multi-disk.

Since you've said that the DVD you are trying to copy is a video DVD,
the only way to copy it to two disks and keep it playable would be
to reauthor it by splitting the VOB files.

I'd recommend using DVD Shrink to re-encode the video so that it all
fits on one single layer DVD. The reencoding is very high quality
and the menus are preserved. ...and it's *free*, so what's not to like?

I tried DVD shrink and it gives me error "DVD Shrink encountered an
error and cannot continue failed to read H:\----- data error (cyclic
redundancy check". This DVD plays otherwise fine on the DVD player.

Regarding the suggestion of splitting the VOB files, then I think there
will have to be a file that will recreate the total VOB file later and
how that would be managed I do not know? I use file splitter
1.3(http://www.dekabyte.com/filesplitter/)

Your computer's DVD drive is having a hard time reading that disc.

I suggest that you try carefully cleaning it, and trying again. I could
work. ;-)

Your DVD player is willing to throw away blocks that it can't read.
There are some PC programs that will do likewise (like ISO Buster).
