during preview / capture - no audio

When I am running the preview, deciding where & what to capture,
there is no audio - just the video from the camcorder.
I have to actually fold out the camcorder screen to hear the audio
which has some announcements I need to hear to act as cues
for when I need to start & stop the capture.

When I play the timeline, the video + audio play fine.

Any ideas why the preview/capture don't have audio ?
PS - the "mute" checkbox is blank

weird - since it's running real time,
and I have to listen to the camcorder speaker for the audio announcements...
