Duplicate/Deleted Addresses in Address Book

I have a vexing problem with Outlook 2003. There are numerous
duplicate/deleted addresses showing up in my address book that are not in my
Contacts folder. For example, my address book shows something like this:

Joe Smith (e-mail address removed)
Joe Smith (e-mail address removed)

In my Contact list, Joe only has one eMail address defined -
(e-mail address removed) (i.e. nothing in the second and third eMail address
fields.)

When I click on the properties for the "(e-mail address removed)", it takes me
to the contact record for (e-mail address removed).

The only way I have found to solve this problem is to totally delete the
contact record and start over again......doesnt' seem like it should work
this way....

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Where exactly are you seeing these "non-existent" addresses?
The Outlook Address Book cannot display any information other than what
resides in your Contacts Folder, so I doubt you are referring to the Address
Book.

I know it sounds crazy, and it has been driving me crazy, but that is
exactly what is happening, i.e. the Address Book pop-up is displaying
information that isn't in the Contacts folder (which is configured to be the
source of the address book.) I can send you screen shots if you like...

I don't need screen shots. You need to examine your configuration more
closely. The Outlook Address Book does not exist. It is merely a dynamic
display of the electronic addresses in one or more of your Contacts Folders.
So if you are referring to the Outlook Address Book, those addresses exist
in one of the Contact Folders in your profile. See how many Contact Folders
exist in your profile. See how your Outlook Address Book is configured. Make
sure you are not talking about your autocompletion cache.

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, I understand the Outlook Addreas
book architecure and have checked all of those things and deleted my .NK2
file.

In reviewing the contacts that are showing up as duplicates, these are
people who used to have a first and second eMail address listed, but I had
deleted their second eMail address on their contact record. Strangely, they
were still showing a "Display As" entry for their second eMail address, but
no actual eMail address. When I put in a phony second eMail address and then
deleted it, the duplicate entries disappeared. Very strange.

While arguably this fixes my problem, I really wonder how it is that the
application allows for data to get in this kind of state, especially since it
was displaying an eMail address that didn't exist in the contact record
anymore. It was as if it was caching it somewhere (not in the .NK2 file since
I had already deleted that.)

Odd, indeed. And not reported before to my knowledge.
If I understand you correctly, email addresses that you delete from the
Contact Record still display in the Outlook Address Book.
How did you delete these addresses?
What happens if you reconnect the Outlook Address Book?
