Dumprep o -k

My comp suddenly did a restart and then was unresponsive
and the hard drive light was on constantly (not normal).
I found "dumprep o -k" in msconfig startup. This was not
there before.I disabled it and after a very long restart
the computer seems normal. Was my hard drive
being "dumped"?

Do a search on the file "dumprep*". Right-click on it to look at its
Properties and look under the Version tab. What does it say?

This only happened once. There was no error message. The
version is 5.1.2600.1106. I checked the event log, there
was a reboot from a "bug check". Why is it in startup?

I noticed that a link to dumprep.exe is in my C:\Windows\Prefetch directory
so it must've also ran once on my system. However, I don't see it in a
registry Run key. In which registry key do you find dumprep.exe? Is it the
RunOnce key?

Unless you are paying Microsoft for a support contract, there isn't much
point in generating a dump file on a BSOD (blue screen of death).
Right-click My Computer, select Properties, under Advanced tab panel, click
Settings button for Startup and Recovery. Under "Write debugging
information", select "(none)". No point in wasting the time to generate the
dump file and waste the disk space for it if you are never or rarely going
to send it to Microsoft for analysis. That's how I have it currently setup
on my machine. Maybe that's why I don't see dumprep (dump report) as a
startup item.
