When I try to open an attachment my PC does not respond and I find in
"Processes" that up to 4 dumprep.exe are running and usung close to 100% of
the CPU

dumprep is that little tool that dumps process information to a file and
then asks if you want to send information to Microsoft. Is it with any
attachment that this happens? Have you tried scanpst? Have you tried a new
mail profile? Exactly what have you tried to fix it? What version of
Outlook?

You can disable Dumprep: "How to disable dumprep.exe:

Right click on “My Computer,†choose “Properties†from that menu.
Click on “Advanced tab,â€
Click the “Error Reporting†button.
Check the “Disable error reporting†box. You may choose to uncheck the the
box below it, “But notify me when an error occurs,†if desired.
Voila, the annoying dumprep.exe tool is now disabled!"
