Dug myself an even bigger hole

Jim Ludwig

I recently posted to the group that I was trying to get a 56K modem to work
and some people responded that I examine some bios settings. I got into the
bios, made a few changes and now, my other computer does not work at all! I
get nothing but a black screen at all times. From a cold start, the power
light comes on, I can hear the fan start, but no bios screens at all on the
monitor. Furthermore, the monitor's power light stays orange rather than
turning green like it does when it gets a signal. After awhile, the power
light on the cpu goes out, but the fan is still turning. I can't even get
back into the bios. Quite honestly, I don't even remember what I changed
nor what I did to make this happen. Can anyone bail me out here? How do I
get back into the bios again?
Thanks,
Jim

Do you have a PC speaker? if not install one, there is a spot on the
MB for it.

The bios will beep to indicate your system status, One beep all is
fine, none or more refers to the problem.

Google: bios beep codes

Check the manual for your motherboard. There should be a way to reset the bios.
It often involves changing a motherboard jumper position momentarily. As a last
resort, you can remove the button-type battery from your motherboard for a
couple of minutes and then put it back (make sure your computer power cord is
UNPLUGGED before attempting any of this).

Of course, BIOS changes may be needed once it has been reset to factory default
settings. It's always a good idea to write down any changes made.

If you're not comfortable working with the motherboard or with changing BIOS
settings, suggest you get somebody who is to do it.

You could try shorting out the CMOS which should reset your BIOS to
thedefaults, to do this may mean removal of the motherboard (MB)
battery and the shorting out of a pair of pins on the MB - check your
MB manual.

Once you have reset the BIOS you will need to set the date and time and
check the BIOS settings to suit your machine - again see your MB manual.

The BIOS is a read-only memory. It cannot be reset by shorting
pins on the motherboard. You would need to perform a firmware
upgrade to make any modification to the BIOS.

On the other hand it is the CMOS memory that gets reset, either
by removing the motherboard battery for several minutes or by
shorting two pins as explained in the motherboard manual.

Should be cross-posting instead of multi-posting. Did not see
anybody in the Microsoft newsgroups who had recommended looking
into the bios.

Anyway, get out the motherboard manual and read up the bios
section. If you had built the system yourself and have all of
the motherboard installation cdroms, it might be possible that
there is a way to restore the bios or recover the bios. At least
it is possible for some of the more recent ASUS motherboards.
Will need a floppy disk drive for this maneuver.

Either your mainboard or your CPU has died.

Thanks to everyone who responded to this problem. For those that
recommended that I move the jumper near the cmos battery to reset the bios,
that did the trick! I can't tell you all how relieved I was when that
sucker reloaded the defaults and fired up! Thought sure I was going to be
buying a new mobo.
Thanks again,
Jim
