Dual Page Numbering

I have a training manual. Some pages are only for the facilitator, some pages are for the participants. These pages are interleaved, not in separate sections. I'm using Microsoft Word 2000 and this is what I want to accomplish:
  • Full version of manual has page number on each page and in sequential number order.
  • Handout pages also have additional numbering in sequential order.
  • Both sets of numbers update automatically.
  • All needs to be in a footer or inserted in such a way that I can globally set the formatting.
Can this scenario be accomplished?

I tried using the footer--I put in the automatic footer page numbering. Then I tried inserting a field set to automatic numbering. Word wouldn't let me place the field in the footer!

Thanks in advance for your info!
