Dual OS Problem

For christmas my grand father gave me a copy of Windows XP. After a few
weeks, I installed it. However, Windows 2000 remained on my computer, and
although things seem to be going okay with the computer, I would really
prefer to get Windows 2000 off my computer.

I searched through the Support and Troubleshooting sections on Microsoft's
home page, but I could not find any help there (all I found was how to remove
2000, and restore Win98/95).

If anyone knows how I can safely remove Win2000, or knows the Microsoft help
page, help would greatly be apprciated.

I would also like to mention that my computer was home built, so contacting
HP, Compaq or Dell aren't possible.

Do this:
1. Launch Win2000.
2. Click Start / Run / cmd {OK}.
3. Type this command: set systemroot
Make a note of the response. It is probably c:\WinNT.
4. Launch WinXP.
5. Rename c:\WinNT to c:\WinNT.obsolete.
5. Click Start / Run / notepad.exe c:\boot.ini {OK}.
6. Remove the reference to Win2000. If the "Default"
line refers to Win2000, adjust it so that it refers to WinXP.
7. Save and close the file.
8. Wait a week. If all is well, delete c:\WinNT.obsolete.

I am going to assume you only have one hard drive with one partition which
would be c: and that both W2K and XP are installed on this drive.

Backup any and all important data.

If this is the case edit the boot.ini and remove the 2000 entries. Delete
the Winnt folder [W2K installs to winnt and XP to windows].

Otherwise if partitioned to c: and d: with XP on d: delete everything EXCEPT
all files at the root of c:. In other words delete all folders but not files
on c:\ or you won't boot XP any more.

Solution then would be to do a repair install of XP

There is no need to perform a repair installation of WinXP.
