Dual OS but BOOT INI only shows 1 os

I have 1 hd c: xp/98se and d/2k and e/storage. Because when I first installed
the xp, all the 98 files are still inside and take up all the space. So, I
re-install the XP in C: by booting up with the xp disc and which along the
way, I delete the C partition and reformat (Fat32) C and install XP into C.
It completes the installation and when I reboot, it never ask me which OS
(XP or 2K)do I want to boot up. Now, it only boot up straight in XP, which
the 'BOOT INI' shows the following:

boot loader
time out=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition)windows
operating system
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)windows='microsoft windows xp professional'/ fastdetect

Now, how can I get it to give me a choice of XP or 2k. Also I want 2k been
the default choice, which means if I dont select before the time it up, it
will boots in 2k
checking thru the disk management, c: is the primary partition while d: is
extended and e:logical drive.
Need some help and education please....... many thanks for all your help

The one you posted has errors and couldn't possibly work. Try this one on a
boot floppy to be sure it works correctly.

[boot loader]
timeout=30

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP" /fastdetect
/NoExecute=OptIn
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Windows 2000" /fastdetect

For the floppy to successfully boot Windows XP the disk must contain the
"NT" boot sector. Format a diskette (on a Windows XP machine, not a
DOS/Win9x, so the NT boot sector gets written to the floppy), and copy
Windows XP versions of ntldr, ntdetect.com, and boot.ini (above) to it.

Dave, need a lot of your patience.
Somewhere while reading this forum. I made the following floppy disks

Floppy A - this floppy have a/ a folder called pss
b/ ntldr file 229 kb
c/ ntdetect MS-DOS Application 47kb
The pss folder has 3 files:
i) boot.ini.backup ii) win.ini.backup iii)
system.ini.backup

Floppy B which I think I was told to mark as NTFS BOOT DISK has
ATAPICD, di1000dd, DISK_IMG, DISK_IMG, DISK_IMG.LIC
HDERASER, HDERASER.LIC, kernel, KILLDISK, KILLDISK,
KILLDISK.LIC
PR, PR, PR.LIC,
READNTFS, READNTFS, READNTFS.LIC
SHSUCDX, UNERASER, UNERASER, UNERASER.LIC
USBASPI, USBCD
(some files have the same name but different logo/icon infront of them)

Can I used any of the floppy above? If not, I can format using the xp
machine but where exactly can I find the files ( ntldr, ntdetect.com, and
boot.ini ). Sounds very silly but I just cannot find it under c: drive

Also I guess I just 'copy' and 'paste' and as for the 'boot.ini' guess just
make sure that the lines are exactly as what you have written.

Copy ntldr and ntdetect.com from the root of the system partition. Usually
C:\

Explorer|Tools|Folder Options|View, then radio button for "Show hidden files
and folders", then uncheck the box for "Hide protected operating system
files" to locate the file in the root of the system partition.

Yes create a file with notepad.exe, paste in the contents I posted (adjusted
for line wrap) and save it as boot.ini on your floppy. Then try booting your
system from the floppy. The reason for the floppy (in case it wasn't
obvious) is to test for correct operation while not changing your system.

I have changed the boot sequence to 'A,C,SISCI' and boot from the floppy. It
give me a choice with the default as 2k. Now, does that means I always I to
boot from the floppy diskette. Many thanks.

No, after you have tested that both startup options from floppy work
perfectly then just replace C:\boot.ini with the copy at A:\boot.ini

Many thanks and it works great now and booting without the floppy. Just for
my education, if it possible that instead of replacing the original
'boot.ini' in c: can we rename it say 'bootz' and then copy the new
'boot.ini' into c:

Yes, absolutely. Just rename the original to boot.old

Also note that you can change the default OS to start by going to Control
Panel|System|Advanced|Startup and Recovery from either OS

Well Dave, need yr help, something wrong here. After the installation xpsp2,
I went to Windowupdates and install KB873374/885250/867282/873333. Somewhere
along the installation think its 'GUI', it ask a question I CLICK NO, THEN
CLICK YES.... the process continue and restart the pc. Now, when boot up,
only the wall paper and there is not even the START icon. What can I do now?

Completely unrelated issue. What did you answer NO to? CAD then you can try
manually starting the shell Task Manager|File|New Task

reading and understanding before I act on it.

When I type "%systemroot%\explorer.exe", it gives me {{"window Explorer"
-window explorer has encounterd a problem and needs to close......... error
