Dual-Core vs Dual Processor for Numerical Analysis

Hi,

I am trying to get a system, which is capable for doing heavy
numerical analysis. I ended to some system with Dual-core and Dual
processor. I searched internet for comparing these two processors but
could not find proper information.

I wonder to know if any of you have any suggestion. Mainly, I may run
Matlab 7 and SPSS. My concern is working with heavy load of data that
need complicated and time-consuming data processing. I also may use
ANSYS or ABAQUS to solve some human body limbs models. I am looking
for a system to speed up these processes.

I also wonder to know if you recommend a desktop or laptop for that.

I appreciate your responses.

Do you have documentation for these applications? Check that they are
multithreaded (can make full use of dual core processors) before you go any
further, otherwise you might end up spending lots on a dual core PC and only
use one core for heavy processing!

I googled "Dual-Core vs Dual Processor" with the quotes and found several
benchmarks.

I read in the past that the dual core cpus have a slight edge over dual
cpus.

dual core is _lots_ cheaper than dual processor system, but should provide
aprox same performance (maybe even better in some circumstances).
otoh there are other options -- quad-core or two dual-core. (i'm not sure
that two quad-core systems exist).
you should check documentation of programs you use if they support multiple
threads.
but dual-core comes almost for free :)

as for exact processor, i think intel xeon 5160 should be good.
if you like overclocking and short on budget, you can buy intel core 2 duo
e6600, it should give quite good performance when overclocked.

laptop with dual processors for numeric analysis? you are joking.
