Dual Boot

I was having some performance issues and wanted to
reinstall Win XP. When I did, I thought that I was
installing over my current installation. Turns out that I
have two copies on my HD and when it boots, it asks which
copy to boot to. How can I remove the new copy and avoid
this boot issue.

Is there a way to reinstall XP and keep all my files
intact without this problem. That's what I thought I was
doing the first time.
