dual boot

Joris Compernolle

Hello,

I was wondering if it would be possible to create a dual boot with Windows
XP Pro and Windows 98 SE. The problem is that Windows XP Pro is already
installed and I now want to create the dual boot with Windows 98 SE. Most
sites however seem to recommend to install Windows 98 SE first and then
Windows XP Pro. And I don't feel like spending the whole day, at least,
taking backups and reinstalling programs.

Greets,

Joris

What's your WinXP system partition, FAT32 or NTFS?

You will need third party bootmanager software to accomplish installing 98
SE after XP is installed.
Click on or copy and paste the link below into your web browser address box.
Boot manager Links
BootIT NG from Terabyte

BootMagic that ships with PartitionMagic

Not necessarily. If the OP's system partition is FAT32
then he can easily install Win98. He must then fix up
the boot process.

Greetings --

It may be possible, providing that the WinXP partition is using
the unsecure FAT32 file system.

File system is NTFS. Tried using Partition Magic 8.0 to create the dual
boot. It didn't work out as planned. So now I have my dual boot with Win 98
SE and Win XP, but at the cost of all my data. Luckily I had a backup of the
most important data. Problem solved, I guess. :)

In my first reply to this post, I asked if your file system
was FAT or NTFS. If you had taken the time to reply
then I would have suggested a non-destructive method
of dual-booting in an NTFS environment.

The overall issue, of course, is that you must back up
your important files to an independent medium on a
weekly basis. Many people ignore this fundamental
rule until they get a really big incentive, such as losing
their hard disk.

Thanks for clarifying, I should have and usually do include that
information.

Noticed this thread... I have the same problem, XP installed (NTFS) and in
use, want to install Win98 on another HD partition (to enable me to run
older hardware device). How can this be done w/o reinstalling XDP & w/o
destroying my data?

Instead of building on a stale thread, let's start this thing properly.
State exactly what you current disk structure is, then describe what you
want to achieve.

Example:
Master disk, drive C: (primary partition), NTFS, 10 GBytes, WinXP
Professional
Master disk, drive D: (logical drive), FAT32, 10 GBytes, ???
Master disk, drive E: (logical drive), FAT32, 5 GBytes, ???

Slave disk: unpartitioned, 4 GBytes, ???

etc.

OK:

Master disk, drive C: (primary partition), NTFS, 40 GBytes, running WinXP
Master disk, drive D: (logical drive), FAT32, 17 GBytes, no important data
Objective: install Win98SE on D: safely and without reinstalling WinXP. Purpose - to run older software that is incompatible with XP and is no longer supported by manufacturer.

Note: I also have an optional external HD, drive E: formatted, as yet unpartitioned, 30 GBytes.

Great, now I know the score.

Since your primary partition is NTFS, you cannot boot into Win98,
using the WinXP native boot loader. You must use a third-party
boot loader.

Here is my preferred solution:
- Leave WinXP in drive C:.
- Create an 8 MByte partition at the far end of the disk for XOSL.
- Load XOSL into its own partition.
- Use XOSL to boot into WinXP or into Win98
This solution is nice and robust. However, it requires an extra partition.
To create it you would either use a partitioning tool (PQMagic), or
you would have to delete, then recreate drive D:.

Here is an acceptable solution:
- Leave WinXP in drive C:.
- Load XOSL on drive D:
- Use XOSL to boot into WinXP or into Win98
This solution works nicely. It is a little less robust, because XOSL
must coexist with the other stuff on drive D:. It should be safe as
long as you leave it alone.

And here is the road map:
1. Download XOSL. It's free.
2. Install it either in its own partition, or on drive D:.
3. Add WinXP to the XOSL menu.
4. Post your results here.
There will be a need to apply a couple of tricks to install
Win98 on drive D:, and to make it bootable.
