Dual boot

I'm currently using xp as my main OS, I intend to install
Linux and dual boot with it. The xp is occupying the full
partition of the drive but there are still plenty of
space for another OS. My question is if I were to
repartition the drive, should I do it before installing
Linux or during the process of installation? I don't have
partition magic on hand, so what would you guys recommend
me to use for partition? Notice there's Disk Druid, fdisk
and Fips in Linux, could I used those? And is it true tat
using NTFS, it only can be read from Linux but couldn't
write? As for fat32, it could read and write from Linux?
