Dual boot problem

C is 98 and D is XP.
Got boot disk failure on 98, but XP would still boot.
Used 98 startup CD and did a "sys c:" ( a no no)
Computer booted fine into 98, but no menu for XP or 98
Used the XP CD and ran the recovery console. Ran "bootfix"
Dual boot option came back, boots into XP.
But now I'm getting the "boot disk failure" again on 98.
Right back where I started.
What do I do to get them both to work?

I know there had to be an easier way to do it, but I did a sys c: on it
again, got 98 back, then did a repair install of XP. It took an hour but
at least everything works again.
