Hi
I would suggest using SUMPRODUCT instead. e.g. if your dates are in
column A and you values in column B use
=SUMPRODUCT((A1:A100>=DATE(2004,1,1))*(A1:A100<DATE(2004,4,1)),B1:B100)

This way you don't have to create a separate criteria range
