dsl Networking

Hi all, I have a small network at home running dsl for Internet. The current
config is:

SBC Yahoo! <===> DSL modem (dyn IP) <==> SMC router (w/ userid/pwd to log
in SBC) <==> my Win2K Pro & Server computers.

My Win2K Pro: uses DHCP.
My Win2K Server: uses local static IP like 192.168.2.30 and 31 with subnet
mask = 255.255.255.0.

I want to make 192.168.2.30 be domain controller for my local network. Will
that be possible? My problem so far was that I could not add any computers
to this domain. It keeps saying something like Domain Path not found when
adding the 192.168.2.31.

Please help. Thanks.

The problem is with DNS. You will need to configure a forward lookup zone for your AD domain on your DC. Make sure the DC points to only itself for DNS.
Then configure the clients that you will add to your domain to point at the DC for DNS as well. Since the clients are DHCP and your SMC router is handing out
addresses, your clients are probably getting your ISP's DNS servers instead of the internal DNS server. All machines in the AD will need to point only at your
internal DNS server for DNS. You can then configure forwarders to your ISP if you wish or simply rely on root hints for Internet name resolution. Roots hints are
already configured on your DNS server.

Thank you,

Also suggest that poster get a decent hardware firewall to put between
Internet router and LAN - not just a simple NAT device. A NetGear FVS318 is
about $130 US, and will save a lot of heartache.
