Dsl Modem does not detect computer.

This problem happens once in a while. I unhook my computer at home.
When i connect it all back, the DSL modem i have does detect the DSL line but does not detect that it is connected to my computer and i cannot connect to the internet. There is nothing wrong with the ethernet cable connecting the modem & computer
This happened before and i was able to fix it by unhooking eveything and reconnecting it.(after trying it like 10 times
Specs
Win XP Pr
512 mb DDR210
100 gb WD caviar HD & 40 gb Maxtor H
built in Via network adapte
Speedstream 5600 or 6500(i don't rem exactly) ADSL mode
ISP = SBC Yaho
400 watt power supply Ante

I'm pretty sure i have the latest drivers for the Via NIC card.
Anyone with any ideas why this is happening. It is really annoying
Thanks in advance for all your help

Is the DSL unit USB or Ethernet (Network adapter)?

I think you need to have a cross-over cable to connect a Ethernet based DSL
unit. Windows does not detect the DSl unit.

Also, is your Ethernet network adapter working in Windows? It could be
loose after the move.

If you have an ehternet pci card installed, the connector is pulgged into
that.. I don't know what 'Yves' means by cross-over cable(?)......And why do
you disconnect the DSL anyway?
If you want a disconnect for whatever reason, just unplug the power cable
from the back of the modem instead of disconnecting the DSL wire......
People are strange. What you are really doing is 'telling' WIndows to setup
a new DSL internet connection each time...In effect anyway..

The computer detects the adsl modem, not the other way around.. re. other
replies you have got, you do NOT need a crossover cable unless connecting
two pc's thru a hub such that each pc has its own connection.. the most
likely problem is a bad connection along the line somewhere.. I used a
Speedstream 5600 and hub while living in Spain.. Telefonica set it up
originally, and I never had problems with it despite messing and removing
connections such that I could clean behind the desk..
