Dropped Mapped Connections....

I have a Windows XP box that continually drops the mapped drive to "S" in my
2000/2003 network. I don't understand why because I have a notebook that I
login with using the exact same login and it never looses the mapped drive.

What should I look for?

Are you losing only the mapped drive connection ? How about shared
printers, etc.? In my experience, I have found that when I have lost a
mapped resource, it was because I lost the actual network connection,
no matter how briefly. If you are on a wired network, I would check
all cables, connectors, NIC, etc. If you're wireless, check signal
strength, etc. (I have also found that if you're running your wireless
NIC in power save mode, sometimes it will not reconnect to the shared
resources when it comes out of that mode). Just a few things to try .

What's really strange is that if I go to the run command and \\servername it
will appear but if from a command prompt I type "S" it will not find the
map. I have to reboot the client PC to have map reappear.

Now, maybe I'm reading too much into this, or maybe I don't fully
understand your problem, but from a command prompt, you ARE typing a
":" after "S"...right??

my laptop does the same thing
somewhere I read something like ...
to conserve resources the mapped drives disconnects after x-minutes of non
use.
so when my drives are mapped,,
explore shows Z on netServer on the left plane,,,,
the right sector shows Z on netServer of type 'Disconnected Network Drive`
and then from cmd window it cant find Z: nor anything.else on that drive
path.
yet if I use a desktop shortcut, instantly connects drive and then cmd
prompt will find Z:

nifty eh
