drives suddenly not seen by O/S

Opsimath

I just installed Corel Paint Shop Pro 10. During one install session,
a reboot was required in order to complete the process. The program cd
remained in the cd drive during the reboot and I was distracted by
some other minutia. When I glanced up at the screen I caught a glimpse
of some sort of message from, I presume, Windows XP.

The system finished booting and I found that neither the cd/dvd drive
nor the cd-writer drive are seen by the O/S. This is almost funny
because until now I had to manually reboot or shutdown - now the
computer does these processes without complaint - but I don't have a
clue about what happened to the drive.

Anyone? Please, help.
