Drives are not accessible

Please help

I had a computer (which I'd built for my parents) which was working fine. I
left it with them for three weeks and now none of the drives are accessible.

I put a floppy in the a:\ double click the a:\ in my computer and the
following message appears:

A:\ drive is not accessible, invalid function. This also happens for all of
the CD drives. Peculiarily when I plug a USB stick into the USB drive
windows XP also identifies that a device has been plugged in but then when I
double click it the same error message (except it's the F: drive) appears.

Any ideas???

Though it's funny - I really can't cope with having to do that!

There must be another way.

This isn't the dreaded total system restore to factory specs.

It just allows you to rollback computer by a minimum of 1 day or up to even
thirty days.

will have to reinstall only apps installed withing that time frame. If all
personnel documents Will not be lost as long as there in document and
settings folder.

I have managed to get the CD drives working of sorts by unplugging and
re-plugging them and re-installing the drivers. They can now play audio CDs
and even the original windows CD - when I click on the drive with the windows
CD in the computer autoplays and displays the standard windows disk screen
(add/remove programs, re-install etc.) However explorer shows a blank screen
when I go through my computer / windows explorer.

The floppy drive is still doing my head in. I know something is happening
because the cmoputer is trying to boot from the floppy during start up ( i
left it in by mistake) and so it's reading the floppy enough to know that
it's not a boot disk - however in explorer or my computer the inaccessible
message still appears upon double clicking!

The USB thing is even more odd because when I plug mine in from work,
Windows detects the new hardware and even displays the exact part number in
the sys tray but when I double click in my computer the same error message
appears.

Please please please can anyone shed some light on this - I'm going insane!

Dear Dan:
I have an identical problem.
In My computer clicking on a:, D:, or E (burner) drives results in he
message: Not accessible: incorrect function.

When plugging new device, as for instance a digital camera in the USB slot,
it is not recognized as a new device.

When putting a CD-rom, whether music or programme, in the D og E drive,
nothing happens.

I can access a music CDrom via Windows Media Player and jplahy the music,
only not directly via the CD rom.

I have tried to see properties of the drives, also the device manager, but
everything seems to be in order.

I hesitate to copy all files and start with Windows XP Home again,

Who can help me?
