drivers &/or firmware for cd rom & rw drives

ben

good morning. i have an issue that i was hoping that i
could receive some help on. i feel dumb for asking
around the Microsoft side but i'm not getting any support
from compaq. i have purchased a compaq computer
originally installed with win 98 se. i have since
upgraded with a retail version of win xp pro. since the
upgrade i have not been able to use my cd rom or cd rw
drives. they show as enabled & working properly. but
will not play any cd's (music or data) or burn any cd's.
when i put a music cd in i can explore the drive & see
the audio files but when i attempt to play them it says
that the cd is not in the drive?

i've unistalled the drivers for the drives &
reinstalled. i've upgraded the chipset drivers. and
i've attempted to contact compaq (the maker of the
computer & both the drives) but they have sent me on a
wild goose chase & ended up telling me that they will not
support any computer user that upgrades their original
preloaded version os to a new retail version os. so even
though its their drives & they should issue updated
firmware & drivers for their drives they said they wont
help me & my only option is to restore my computer to its
original settings and live with win 98 se. unfortunately
i can not do so as i've already paid for xp pro & its too
much money to throw away and because i was having a huge
problem with 98se & my isp. since i've already won the
battle with xp & my isp i'd rather not have to revert
back to the previous battle for no reason.

please tell me you can assist me in my quest to find
support for my cd drives. thank you so much. ben

Ben, do you have the latest XP-compatible drivers? Can you visit the website
of the drive manfacturer and download the latest XP-compatible drivers?
