Drivers for USB Camera

Hi

I have a Konica Milolta Dimage Z5 camera. I have not used it since
installing Vista. I tried to copy some recent photographs to hard drive and
it started to look for the drivers for the camera. I put the disk in that
came with the camera, but Vista says it's for Win 98/ME and refuses to
install it.

I've looked on Konica's web site, but they're not supporting cameras anymore
and I can't find anything that suggests how to resolve this.

As it's a USB connection why is it looking for drivers? It would work fine
with XP without loading any drivers.

I also have 2 USB pen drives that it says it needs drivers for, but 2 more
work fine, as soon as they are connected.

Why does Vista do this?

TIA

Hi Seven,

If you have a card reader on your machine and your camera uses SD memory
cards (or equivalent), you might like to see if you can access your photos by
plugging your memory card directly in to the reader. This is actually the
best way to do it if you have a lot of photos to transfer as it will save the
batteries in your camera. If you don't have a card reader, they can be
obtained from most computer hardware shops relatively cheaply. Most card
readers will read from (and write to) several types of memory device. For
each physical memory card slot on your reader there should be a drive in
Computer starting at the next available drive letter. As for your other point
about USB pen drives simply try using a different USB port.

I sympathize, Seven ... same thing here ... fortunately for me, my husband
has an XP laptop, so, my workaround is to upload to his laptop, then
transfer to a flash card, then get it into my Vista machine.

I know I am being terribly sentimental about my very old Intel Pocket PC USB
camera, but I just loved that little thing ... I took many thousands of
pictures with it and some very short but funny silent videos of the kids ...
I think that is why I am reluctant to finally let it go ...

If you get a new one, check to see which format it uses for videos before
you buy and make sure you are set up to use that format ... sorry for having
no better help for you than a workaround with an XP machine ... good luck

Hi Dwarf

Many thanks. I was considering a card reader, but wanted to see if I could
get the camera working first.

But I would still like to know what has happened to 'plug and play' in
Vista, it works for somethings and not others, which is crazy!!!!

Hi Vanillia

I also have a laptop, unfortunately, it has Vista on it. I'm more annoyed
that I can't get half my usb stuff working. The pen drives never needed
drivers before and my camera is only a couple of years old. This OS is
really flawed!!

I think you might find using the card reader to be more convenient than
having to connect your camera to your PC in order to get your photos.

Hi

I'm going out to buy one later.

But where or who do I go to ask about the rest of the problems with the USB
drivers?

Try the hardware group microsoft.public.windows.vista.hardware. Wish I
could help but I've not experienced any issues with my external USB drives,
Ipod, or memory sticks. Wait a minute - I do have two "PSD" units (Personal
Storage Devices) that I use to dump photos onto from my memory cards so I
can reuse the cards while I'm on vacation shooting. I don't know if those
work via their USB 2 connections. If not, I've got a problem but I'll find
out tonight.
